In his YouTube video "What is the Internet of Things? And why should you care?" Benson Hougland introduced an emerging concept of connecting devices to the Internet, the Internet of Things, and discussed its importance. He started by stating that the Internet is among the most transformative technologies ever invented, describing it as a digital fabric woven into our lives. He asserted that there is another internet emerging, not just to connect people across distances, but this time to connect several devices. This is the Internet of Things, enabling several devices to connect, communicate, and collaborate. IoT is a transformative technology, contributing to the advancements that enhance our quality of life.

Smartwatches are among the great examples of IoT devices, as they were designed to function similarly to smartphones. However, they are capable of collecting some data that smartphones cannot. They are capable of collecting heart rate, physical activity, and other vital signs. Wearable devices track fitness and encourage users to stay active, eat healthily, and manage stress by providing feedback or personalized recommendations. IoT technologies improved patient care, hospital management, and medical research. Doctors can provide virtual consultations and track patient’s health using telemedicine, enabling remote patient monitoring.
The development of smart homes with devices like smart thermostats, lights, and voice-controlled assistants (e.g., Alexa) to control daily tasks is one of the most notable advancements in home automation. Moreover, home automation systems can be connected to mobile apps, allowing homeowners to monitor their homes remotely, enhancing the living experience in modern homes, and making daily tasks easier and more efficient. Household systems like lighting, heating, security, and entertainment can be controlled and monitored remotely with the use of IoT technology, achieving higher convenience, energy efficiency, and comfort.
IoT technologies in transportation led to smart cities, more efficient traffic management, and travelers’ safety. Real-time data on traffic conditions, vehicle locations, road infrastructure, and weather patterns can be collected with IoT sensors, cameras, and GPS systems. Self-driving cars were also enabled by IoT, reducing potential accidents.
IoT in businesses transformed how owners operate and engage with customers to create a more personalized and seamless shopping experience. Customers can make payments through e-wallets for cashless transactions.
The Internet of Things (IoT) allows for better monitoring and management as the world faces the challenges of climate change and pollution. IoT in weather systems alerts residents and gives them the time to take preventive measures like staying indoors or wearing protective clothes. IoT technologies like smart grids can optimize electricity distribution, and smart waste bins can modernize waste management to improve the sorting and disposal of waste. In the agricultural sector, IoT contributes to food security and food conservation as sensors can detect soil moisture level, temperature, and nutrient content necessary for irrigation, fertilization, and crop management.
The Internet of Things (IoT), including smart cameras, motion sensors, and smart locks, transforms how we protect our homes, businesses, and personal belongings for heightened levels of surveillance and control. Smart locks enhance home security by reducing the risks of unauthorized access with keyless entry. Smart doorbells with built-in cameras are mostly prominent in other countries, providing homeowners with a live feed of visitors at their doorsteps and allowing them to communicate through their smartphones. Moreover, motion detectors, smoke detectors, and glass break detectors alert homeowners to prevent further accidents and warn them of possible intruders.

The Internet of Things (IoT) has transformed sectors of home automation, safety and security, transportation, environment, retail, and health and lifestyle, improving the way people live, work, and interact with technology. IoT has revolutionized how data is collected, analyzed, and used by connecting objects to the internet. Moreover, it connects people with information, resources, and opportunities that improve individual lives and society, besides connecting devices.
