Understanding how to navigate, interact, and contribute responsibly and ethically has always been important online. Digital citizenship requires individuals to show appropriate behaviors toward the use of technology to engage in society, interact with others, and access information in a way that aligns with ethical standards and social norms. A digital citizen is someone who is well aware not only of his rights but also of his responsibilities online and maintains a positive online presence because he understands the complications of his actions. Thus, he actively and responsibly engaged in the online community, not just as a digital consumer but also as a producer of digital content.
Below are the characteristics that define a responsible digital citizen.
Digitally literate: Digital literacy is not just about knowing how to use digital technologies or navigate software applications but also knowing how to find, evaluate, and use information effectively and protecting them from fraudsters.
Ethical: A digital citizen should be mindful of their behavior online. They must refrain from sharing harmful contents or misleading information and encourage others to do the same. They only engage in respectful conversation and adhere to privacy laws, intellectual property rights, and netiquette.
Aware of online safety: A digital citizen minimizes their vulnerability to potential risks online. They understand the risks that come with using the internet, remain cautious, and take proactive measures to ensure data security. This awareness also extends to respecting others' privacy.
